Priorities of the Belgian Presidency

Brussels, 25 June 2010 - As Belgium announces its priorities for the forthcoming Presidency of the European Union, which will begin on 1st July, Interel European Affairs and Interel Belgium have come together to provide an insight into the key focus areas for the Presidency over the coming 6 months and into the political situation which surrounds this presidency (See analysis attached). This update also includes an interview with Frans Baron van Daele, the right hand man of the Belgian President of the Council, Herman Van Rompuy.

The main priorities have now been defined and will include: the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, the EU budget, the future of economic policy, the social dimension and employment, the climate, the environment and energy. The next six months will be a crucial time to put Europe on the track to recovery and to consolidate institutional reform and the role of Belgium will be crucial in achieving these important goals.
